I have been keeping my sketchbook at hand over the past few weeks in order to understand the application of line more concisely when approaching the human form. In my works, I have attempted to understand portray the figure as almost sculptural, and through artists such as Giacometti and Diebenkorn, whom has manipulated the use of line around the body to give an almost sculptural form within the drawings, layering lines in order to create such an effect. The forms used are used not only to keep a fresh eye on the structure of the human form, but to allow me to make sense of representing a 3-dimensional figure on a flat surface, using tonal work to bring forward features of the face and body, and using line in an almost contouring fashion to replicate the sculpting of the form.
